Galamsey activities in around the municipality is not only destructive to the environment but also introduces social vices wherever it occurs

The regional director of Environmental Protection agency Madam Zenabu Wasai King has stated there are many galamsey sites in around the upper west region doing all manner of activities in order to rake out the precious metal gold.

Speaking to radio progress news the regional director said that apart from the massive destruction and continues pollution of our water bodies, wherever galamsey activities are carried out social vices in the said area tend to increase. She first describes what galamsey does to the environment. She added that lots of productive lands that could be used to farm is destroyed in the process.

She revealed that the other kind of destruction galamsey has on the environment is societal vices like substance abuse and prostitution. She stated that the upper west region is yet to see any person or group of persons that are registered to engage in mining where there can be monitoring and proper reclamation of destroyed land fields.  She stated that district assemblies stand to gain revenue if small scale miners are registered.
