While women are genetically inclined to joints’ pain and arthritis in comparison to their male counterparts, but owing to sedentary lifestyles, lack of proper diet and vitamin deficiency, problem among younger women, around 30 years is also now reported, claims Dr HS Gill, orthopaedic and joint replacement, HoD, at Apollo Hospital during the camp at Sudhar village on Saturday.

Over 100 patients of joints pain and orthopaedic problems, above 50-year age were checked during camp and around 60% were women patients.

“The knee replacement surgeries are getting preference and as per the observation, the problem arises more among women, since they are genetically predisposed to joint pain and rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. Of the total surgeries I have done, nearly 70% were on women,”added Dr Gill.

“With urbanisation, problems like nutrient deficiency, lack of exercise have raised such problems among younger populations, but the problem persists equally among rural ones. The reason among rural women is the habit of sitting in cross-legged or squat position which leads to arthritis problem. The inappropriate intake of nutritions and minerals also aggravates the condition,”he concluded.

REASONS OF ARTHRITIS

Lack of exercise. Genetically predisposed to joint pain among women. High intake of junk food. Also, post menopause, weakening of bones takes place.Rural women, sitting cross-legged or squatting position suffer from this. One must know their body and develop exercises over a period of time. Too much exercise can cause repetitive stress injuries and athletes develop such problems.

PRECAUTIONS
